The patient provides firsthand experiences and insights into their epilepsy, treatment journey, and challenges they have faced, while the healthcare professional offers clinical expertise, guidance, and interpretation.

This CME course is for General Neurologists, Epileptologists, Psychiatrists, Neuromuscular Specialists, Heads of Pharmacy, Movement Disorder Specialists, Neurology Nurses, Heads of Neurology, Pediatric Neurologists and any other healthcare professionals involved in epilepsy care.

Objectives

The purpose of this CME activity is to:

  • Enhance the understanding of healthcare professionals (HCPs) of the burden and challenges associated with epilepsy care.
  • Improve the knowledge and skills of HCPs in the diagnosis and management of those with an epilepsy.
  • Enhance the understanding and implementation of patient-centred care and shared decision-making in the management of epilepsies.

By the end of this CME activity, healthcare professionals should be able to:

  • Describe the complexities and challenges associated with epilepsy care and explain the burdens associated with epilepsies.
  • Recognise the treatment and management guidelines associated with epilepsies and describe the psychiatric, cognitive, and physical risks.
  • Develop and demonstrate communication skills to recognise and enhance the relationship between the person with an epilepsy, carers (where appropriate), and the HCP.
    • This will improve the patient-practitioner relationship, treatment and management knowledge, and better understanding of the patient’s needs.
  • Implement principles and practices of patient-centred care and engage in shared decision-making in the context of epilepsy management; thereby improving the quality of care provided to patients with an epilepsy.
