Free Chickenpox Vaccine for Children Offered By NHS

FROM JANUARY 2026, children in England will be routinely offered a combined vaccine protecting against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox (MMRV) as part of their GP appointments. The new programme is expected to protect around half a million children each year, making chickenpox vaccination freely available on the NHS for the first time.

The introduction of the jab is intended to cut cases of chickenpox and reduce the disruption it causes for families. At present, the illness is responsible for an estimated £24 million in lost income and productivity annually, with parents often needing to take time off work to care for children at home. The move is also forecast to save the NHS £15 million a year by reducing the need for treatment and hospital admissions.

Chickenpox is generally regarded as a mild childhood infection, but it can lead to serious complications. These include bacterial infections such as strep A, inflammation of the brain or lungs, and in rare cases, stroke or death. Health experts stress that the vaccine has been safely used worldwide for decades, and is already part of routine schedules in countries including Germany, the United States, Canada and Australia.

The government’s decision follows recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, which highlighted the long-term benefits for children’s health and the healthcare system. Evidence from other countries shows the vaccine significantly reduces both the prevalence of chickenpox and related hospitalisations.

Currently, families who wish to vaccinate privately face costs of around £150 for two doses. The rollout will therefore widen access and ensure protection for all eligible children, regardless of income. Officials see the programme as a key step in supporting healthier childhoods, reducing school absences and easing pressures on working parents.
