AN AI tool for streamlining patient discharge summaries has been rolled out by NHS England at two NHS hospital trusts in London.
The Artificial Intelligence Assisted Discharge Summary (AI Assisted DSUM) product, a Class I medical device hosted by the NHS Federated Data Platform, is now live at the Central and North West London and Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trusts.
The AI Assisted DSUM
The model assists clinicians in creating draft discharge summary letters by synthesising information from medical records.
Presenting an exclusive demo of the AI Assisted DSUM on 29th April 2026 at the Health + AI Tech Show, Jonathan Orritt, Deputy Director of Artificial Intelligence Delivery, NHS England, London, UK, said: “It uses large language models to write parts of a discharge summary.
“It is helping clinicians, specifically in North West London and Chelsea and Westminster, at the minute, to write parts of the discharge summary and do so safely.
“What you’re seeing here is parts of the discharge summary written by foundation models – Claud, ChatGPT – and the clinician is in the loop, heavily embedded within that.”
Documents produced by the discharge tool are to be fully reviewed by the practitioner responsible for the patient.
Orritt continued: “This is ideally trying to improve the quality and the consistency in which discharge summaries are written, to improve patient care over time.”
He said the AI Assisted DSUM is the first AI medical device with NHS England as its manufacturer.
Leveraging AI in Public Health Services
Amid the tool’s development in 2025, Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, London, UK, said: “This potentially transformational discharge tool is a prime example of how we’re shifting from analogue to digital as part of our 10 Year Health Plan.
“We’re using cutting-edge technology to build an NHS fit for the future and tackle the hospital backlogs that have left too many people waiting too long.
“Doctors will spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients, getting people home to their families faster and freeing up beds for those who need them most.”
The tool comes as part of a broader governmental push to leverage AI across public services, including the NHS, through the AI Exemplars programme.
Alongside the AI Assisted DSUM, current projects include ambient voice technology for consultation notes, A&E demand forecasting to address waiting times, and diagnostic aids.
There are currently no plans to implement the AI Assisted DSUM beyond the NHS.
