First Imported Ebola Case Recorded in Europe

THE FIRST imported case of Ebola disease in Europe has been confirmed amid the ongoing outbreak, after a doctor returning to France from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo tested positive.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said the risk of sustained transmission in the EU/EEA is “very low”, if underscored by effective measures for early detection, isolation, and treatment of patients.

French Ministry of Health

The French Ministry of Health said the patient was immediately admitted to a specialised facility and is in a stable condition.

The patient was transferred to the hospital under secure conditions to prevent risk of contamination.

A thorough epidemiological investigation is underway, to identify individuals who may have been in contact with the patient, the Ministry reported.

They will be contacted by the regional health agency, undergo 21 days of home isolation, and will be closely monitored during the relevant period.

A dedicated monitoring system is in place for the return of French aid workers to the national territory.

The Ministry said France has specialised capabilities for managing highly transmissible infectious diseases, with patients treated in designated healthcare facilities, subject to strict biosafety protocols.

The situation is being continuously monitored, and health authorities are fully mobilised.

The ECDC has called for EU Member States to maintain preparedness.

To support this, it has developed a practical checklist for national authorities, to guide them in reviewing internal procedures and strengthening readiness.

In a previous declaration, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and the burden that the disease is inflicting on the affected communities and stand in solidarity with the countries affected.”

The statement continued: “We recognise the courageous efforts undertaken by healthcare workers, volunteers, and local communities, and the stepped-up efforts by national governments to respond to this outbreak.”
