DIABETES technology improved disease management but also introduced previously underrecognised challenges, with patients reporting concerns about environmental sustainability, travel, device replacement, and digital security that could influence long term adoption.
Insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, and automated insulin delivery systems have transformed the management of Type 1 diabetes, improving glycaemic outcomes and reducing the day to day burden of care. However, as these technologies become increasingly integrated into routine practice, less is known about how they affect patients’ broader experiences. A new qualitative study highlights emerging issues that extend beyond clinical performance, suggesting the next generation of diabetes technology should be designed with greater attention to patient experience as well as therapeutic benefit.
Researchers analysed free text survey responses from 535 adults with Type 1 diabetes receiving care within a large academic health system. Participants had a mean age of 48 years, with most using continuous glucose monitors (95.0%) and automated insulin delivery technologies, including insulin pumps (69.0%).
While participants acknowledged the clinical benefits of modern diabetes technology, they also described several challenges that have received limited attention in previous research. These included concerns about the environmental impact of disposable device components, stress associated with travelling while carrying diabetes supplies, and inconsistent airport security procedures.
Respondents also highlighted the burden of premature device failures, describing frustration with manufacturer replacement processes and insurance related delays that disrupted access to essential technologies. In addition, some participants expressed apprehension about digital security and the protection of personal health information as diabetes devices become increasingly connected.
The authors suggest these findings demonstrate that successful diabetes technologies should be evaluated not only by their ability to improve glycaemic control but also by their impact on patients’ daily lives. Administrative processes, environmental sustainability, digital trust, and practical usability all emerged as important determinants of long term technology acceptance.
The study highlights opportunities for manufacturers, healthcare providers, and policymakers to develop more patient centred solutions, including streamlined replacement pathways, clearer cybersecurity protections, and device designs that reduce waste and improve portability.
As diabetes care continues to evolve through connected devices and automation, the findings suggest innovation should extend beyond engineering advances alone. Designing technologies that better reflect the realities of everyday living may be essential to ensuring that the benefits of advanced diabetes management are sustainable, accessible, and acceptable for people living with Type 1 diabetes.
