Type 2 Diabetes Rising Among Younger Adults

TYPE 2 diabetes incidence increased significantly among younger adults between 2011 and 2024, while rates remained stable or declined among older age groups, according to an analysis of data from the English National Diabetes Audit. The findings indicated a changing pattern in type 2 diabetes burden, with younger populations experiencing rising disease rates alongside greater increases in BMI at diagnosis.

Rising Incidence Among Younger Adults

The study calculated age-standardised incidence rates for adults with type 2 diabetes by age, sex, and ethnicity over the 13-year period. Researchers used Poisson regression models to assess changes in incidence over time and examined annual changes in median BMI within 26 weeks of diagnosis.

The analysis showed that type 2 diabetes incidence increased among adults aged 20–29 years and 30–39 years. Annual increases were observed in both males and females, with the greatest rises seen among females. Incidence increased across nearly all sex and ethnicity subgroups, except Asian males aged 20–39 years.

The highest incidence rates were reported among White females aged 30–39 years and Black females aged 20–29 years. In contrast, changes were smaller among adults aged 40–59 years, particularly males, while incidence declined among adults aged 60–79 years.

BMI at diagnosis increased across all subgroups over time. The annual increase in BMI was greater among younger adults compared with older age groups, suggesting a link between changing weight patterns and the shifting distribution of type 2 diabetes diagnoses.

Implications For Prevention Strategies

The findings highlighted an increasing burden of type 2 diabetes among younger adults and the need for earlier prevention approaches. Researchers emphasised that rising BMI at diagnosis among younger populations reflected an urgent requirement for focused obesity interventions earlier in life.

These trends may support the development of targeted strategies aimed at reducing future health impacts associated with early-onset type 2 diabetes, particularly among groups experiencing the greatest increases in incidence.
