SEAIC Drives Innovation, Research, and the Response to Emerging Challenges in Allergy Care in Spain

The Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) continues to strengthen its position as one of Spain’s most dynamic scientific medical societies, combining scientific leadership with strong educational, research, and public awareness activities. Over the last year, SEAIC has promoted numerous initiatives aimed at improving knowledge of allergic diseases, supporting clinical research, and providing reliable information to both HCPs and patients.1

One of the Society’s most important ongoing projects is Alergológica 2025, the largest epidemiological study on allergic diseases ever conducted in Spain. This new edition follows previous landmark surveys carried out in 1992, 2005, and 2015. Field data collection is currently underway and is expected to include approximately 4,000 patients, including a dedicated paediatric cohort. The study will provide valuable insights into how allergic diseases are evolving in Spain and how environmental, social, and healthcare-related factors influence disease patterns and patient outcomes.1

SEAIC also maintains a strong commitment to research and continuing medical education. Preparations for the SEAIC International Symposium 2026 are already progressing and will bring together leading national and international experts in the field. In parallel, the Society continues to develop and disseminate key clinical resources, including the GALAXIA anaphylaxis guidelines, the GEMA asthma guidelines, the POLINA consensus document on chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, and the RESCAL quality and safety recommendations.1 Most of them are in cooperation with other medical societies.

Digital transformation has become another strategic priority. SEAIC is actively promoting initiatives related to AI, telemedicine, and healthcare innovation to improve diagnosis, patient monitoring, and personalised treatment. Recent projects led by the Telemedicine and Artificial Intelligence in Allergology group (TEDIAL) illustrate the Society’s commitment to integrating new technologies into routine clinical practice and medical education.1

From a scientific perspective, SEAIC has repeatedly highlighted the growing impact of climate change, air pollution, and environmental exposures on allergic diseases. The Society’s pollen forecasts and expert reports for the 2026 season have emphasised how these factors are contributing to longer, more intense, and increasingly complex pollen seasons across Spain.1 In addition, SEAIC has fostered relationships with patient associations through various activities and meetings. On 24th June 2026, there was an open dialogue meeting between the Board of Directors and the most important patient associations.

Ignacio Dávila, President of SEAIC, has stressed in several recent interventions that allergic diseases are becoming not only more prevalent but also more complex. Advances in precision allergology, molecular diagnostics, and biological therapies are enabling increasingly individualised treatment strategies, particularly for severe asthma, atopic dermatitis, food allergy, and eosinophilic esophagitis.3 A new book entitled ‘Precision Allergy’ is about to be published.

Despite these advances, significant challenges remain. These include strengthening allergy education in medical schools, enhancing collaboration with primary care, increasing the number of allergy specialists within the healthcare system, and ensuring equitable access to innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. According to SEAIC, addressing these challenges will be crucial to responding effectively to the continued rise of allergic diseases, which are increasingly recognised as a major public health challenge worldwide.3
