THE NHS has become the first healthcare system in the world to implement a pioneering “liquid biopsy” blood test for patients with cancer across England, in a move set to transform diagnosis and treatment for tens of thousands of people with lung and breast cancer.
This cutting-edge test detects tiny fragments of tumour DNA circulating in the blood, allowing clinicians to identify genetic mutations and tailor targeted therapies more quickly. For lung cancer patients, it can speed up access to personalised treatment by up to two weeks and help many avoid invasive procedures or unnecessary chemotherapy.
Following a successful pilot involving around 10,000 patients with non-small cell lung cancer, NHS England is now rolling out the test nationally. Up to 15,000 lung cancer patients and 5,000 women with advanced breast cancer are expected to benefit each year. The technology has already been used in over 2,000 patients since April and is hailed as a major breakthrough in cancer care.
Professor Peter Johnson, NHS National Clinical Director for Cancer, described the liquid biopsy as ushering in a “new era of personalised care,” offering faster, kinder, and more precise treatment. For many, the test will avoid delays, reduce side effects, and improve quality of life.
An independent analysis of the pilot found the new approach could save the NHS up to £11 million annually in lung cancer care alone. The test is also being explored for use in other cancers, including pancreatic and gallbladder.
Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting called the development “incredibly exciting,” adding that the government’s investment in modernising the NHS is delivering real results for patients.
With this world-first initiative, the NHS is leading the way in using genomic technology to transform cancer diagnosis and care – offering renewed hope to thousands across the country.
