Diabetes Diet Preference: Which Low-Energy Plan Suits You?

Understanding Diabetes Diet Preference

Weight management is crucial in Type 2 diabetes (T2D) care. While continuous low energy diets (CLED) are widely offered for remission in the UK, not all patients find this approach suitable. Intermittent low energy diets (ILED) may provide a flexible alternative, prompting the need to understand patient preferences.

Survey Reveals Who Chooses Which Diet

A total of 622 adults with T2D completed a survey on demographics, health factors, treatment, and dietary priorities. Results showed younger patients (<65 years) preferred CLED, especially if they valued rapid weight loss or reducing medication dependency. By contrast, ILED was favoured by those prioritising food flexibility and diets compatible with family or social meals.

CLED and ILED Aren’t Always the Top Choice

Interestingly, many participants preferred daily moderate-calorie diets or low-carbohydrate options over either CLED or ILED. Across all diet types, simplicity and clear instructions were repeatedly emphasised, highlighting the importance of practical, easy-to-follow dietary plans.

Implications for Patient-Centred Diabetes Care

Understanding why patients choose certain diets, balancing outcomes like weight loss, blood sugar control, and lifestyle compatibility, can help healthcare professionals tailor advice. Providing diet options that align with personal goals and daily routines may improve adherence and long-term success in managing Type 2 diabetes.
