Sexual Health Needs Overlooked in Ostomy Care

SEXUAL well-being of spouses of patients with colorectal cancer living with an ostomy is significantly impacted, with new research highlighting a critical gap in supportive care that fails to consider the emotional and intimate needs of partners.

A recent descriptive phenomenological study has found that spouses of patients with an ostomy with colorectal cancer often struggle with unmet needs around sexual quality of life, emotional connection, and communication. Conducted through in-depth interviews with 40 participants, the study revealed a complex interplay of physical, psychological, and societal challenges that shape the intimate lives of caregiving spouses.

Many participants reported a decline in sexual satisfaction due to changes in body image, the physical symptoms of cancer treatment, and the burden of caregiving. These factors often led to decreased intimacy, emotional distancing, and avoidance of sexual topics, particularly in settings where discussing sexuality remains culturally taboo.

Despite these difficulties, some couples demonstrated resilience by reconstructing their sense of closeness, shifting their understanding of intimacy, and attempting new ways to connect emotionally and physically. However, this process was frequently hindered by a lack of professional guidance, limited access to psychosocial support, and insufficient education on sexual health during cancer survivorship.

Importantly, the study calls for a shift away from patient-only models of care toward integrated approaches that recognize the dyadic nature of survivorship. Researchers advocate for psycho-oncology nurses to play a central role in initiating sexuality-related discussions and providing tailored support to spouses.

To meet these complex needs, the authors recommend structured psychoeducational programs that promote open communication and emotional reconnection between partners. These resources should be accessible through both in-person and online platforms to maximize reach and impact.

The findings underscore the importance of addressing the often-unspoken challenges faced by spouses and incorporating their well-being into survivorship care strategies to improve outcomes for the couple as a whole.
