LONGER cosmetic consultations were linked to higher same day treatment rates and stronger patient retention.
The findings suggest that time spent during the first aesthetic visit may influence both immediate treatment decisions and longer term engagement in cosmetic dermatology. In a multicenter retrospective study, investigators analyzed 1,951 new cosmetic consultations across six dermatology practices over 1 year, evaluating whether consultation duration was associated with same day treatment, 1 year retention, and 3-year retention.
Initial visits are often where patients assess trust, communication, expectations, and perceived value. In this analysis, longer cosmetic consultations were significantly associated with a greater likelihood of receiving treatment on the same day, with an odds ratio of 1.48 for every additional 10 minutes of consultation time. The association was statistically significant, with p <0.001.
Cosmetic Consultations and Patient Retention
Longer visits were also associated with more modest but significant gains in follow up. Each 10-minute increase in consultation duration was linked with higher 1 year retention, with an odds ratio of 1.07 and p=0.002, and higher 3-year retention, with an odds ratio of 1.08 and p=0.002.
The strongest retention patterns were seen in consultations lasting at least 75 minutes. These visits showed the highest rates of both immediate treatment and longer term patient retention, suggesting that extended initial appointments may create a stronger foundation for sustained patient engagement.
The study included consultation duration, visit indication, age, sex, and follow up outcomes. Although the retrospective design limits causal interpretation, the results point to consultation time as a potentially meaningful and measurable quality factor in cosmetic dermatology practice.
Time Investment May Shape Cosmetic Dermatology Care
For clinicians, the findings reinforce the clinical and operational importance of the first consultation. Longer cosmetic consultations may allow more time to discuss aesthetic goals, clarify treatment expectations, answer patient concerns, and build confidence in the treatment plan.
Patient retention remains a key quality metric in cosmetic dermatology, particularly in settings where long term relationships and repeat care are central to practice success. The data suggest that investing more time at the start of the patient journey may support immediate decision making while also strengthening long term engagement.
