Thousands Potentially Exposed to Measles at US Theme Park

MEASLES exposure at a California theme park prompted a public health alert after prolonged contact.

A person who was infectious with measles visited Universal Studios Hollywood in Universal City, California, on July 26, remaining at the park from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Health officials are investigating the potential public exposure and have advised visitors present during that period to monitor for signs of infection.

Measles Exposure Requires 21 Day Monitoring

Thousands of visitors may have been present during the 11 hour exposure window. People exposed to measles can develop symptoms between 7 and 21 days following contact.

Those who previously had measles or received recommended vaccination are considered likely to have protection but should continue monitoring for symptoms. People who are unvaccinated or uncertain of their immunization status face greater concern following exposure.

Potential symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and rash. Anyone who suspects measles should remain home, avoid work, school, and gatherings, and contact a healthcare professional promptly.

People who remain symptom free after August 16 are no longer considered at risk from this particular exposure.

MMR Vaccine Remains Central to Prevention

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through coughing and sneezing. An infected person can transmit the virus from four days before the characteristic rash appears until four days afterward.

The MMR vaccine remains the primary preventive measure against measles, mumps, and rubella. Children aged 12 months and older are considered fully protected against measles after completing the recommended two dose vaccination series.

Maintaining vaccination coverage has become particularly important as measles activity rises across the United States. As of July 30, 2,371 confirmed cases had been reported nationally in 2026, the highest annual total since 1991.

In 2025, 93% of reported measles cases occurred among people who were unvaccinated, with 243 hospitalizations and three deaths. Pregnant women, infants younger than 12 months, people with weakened immune systems, and those who are not immunized face the greatest potential for serious outcomes.

Rising Cases Reinforce Measles Vaccination

Serious complications of measles can include pneumonia, brain swelling, and death. With summer travel and attendance at crowded venues potentially increasing opportunities for exposure, health officials are urging people to confirm their immunity before travel.

The latest incident also underscores the clinical importance of recognizing possible measles exposure quickly, establishing vaccination status, advising appropriate symptom monitoring, and minimizing further community transmission.
