Emotional Support Fuels Growth in Skin Disorders

PATIENTS with psychophysiological skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, pruritus, and alopecia experience measurable benefits in post-traumatic growth when they receive emotional and informational support, according to new research. The study highlights that support focused on empathy and knowledge-sharing strengthens the relationship between self-esteem and recovery-oriented growth, while tangible support alone has no significant effect.

Involving 100 individuals diagnosed with psychophysiological skin disorders, researchers applied a quantitative, non-experimental design to investigate how social support influences post-traumatic growth. Participants completed the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and data were analyzed using correlation and regression models. Results demonstrated a moderate to large positive relationship between self-esteem and post-traumatic growth. Importantly, emotional-informational support moderated this link, underscoring the value of supportive communication and emotional validation in the context of chronic skin conditions.

The study found that while emotional-informational support enhanced the connection between self-esteem and growth, tangible support, such as practical help or material aid, did not influence outcomes. This distinction reinforces the idea that patients managing visible or symptomatic skin disorders may benefit more from being listened to, understood, and educated about their condition than from solely material assistance.

These findings point to the need for psychosocial interventions that extend beyond medical treatment. Clinicians caring for patients with skin disorders may consider prioritizing emotional and educational support strategies in clinical and community settings. By strengthening patients’ self-esteem and providing supportive dialogue, healthcare professionals can encourage resilience and foster post-traumatic growth, leading to better long-term outcomes for individuals living with chronic dermatological conditions.
