Silke Gillessen, Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland, Bellinzona, Switzerland, joins Jonathan to discuss her specialty of genitourinary oncology, and why personalised and precise treatment is so vital.
Silke Gillessen completed her training in Basel and St. Gallen, Switzerland, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. After returning to Switzerland, she built up the medical oncology unit for genitourinary cancer, and headed the clinical research unit for oncology and haematology in Kantonsspital St. Gallen. She has served as President of the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancers Research (SAKK) for two terms; chaired the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Genitourinary Cancers Group (GUCG); and founded the Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference (APCCC).
Gillessen is currently a Medical Oncologist and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), in Lugano, Switzerland, and Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland, in Bellinzona, Switzerland. She is also Genitourinary Cancer Systemic Therapy Research Chair at the University of Manchester, UK, and Honorary Consultant at The Christie Hospital, Manchester. She continues to work as Consultant in the Department of Oncology and Haematology at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen.
