SCALE 2026: GLP-1 Weight Loss Intensifies Aesthetic Care

GLP-1 Weight Loss and Lean Muscle Concerns

GLP-1 weight loss may intensify aesthetic concerns linked to skin laxity, muscle tone, and body contouring.

A survey of U.S. healthcare professionals found that loss of lean muscle mass following GLP-1-associated weight loss was commonly perceived to affect appearance, with skin laxity, aged appearance, loss of muscle contour and tone, and cellulite emerging as key concerns.

The analysis included 406 healthcare professionals who completed an electronic survey. Respondents had experience treating patients with aesthetic concerns associated with GLP-1 agonists, and 327 reported offering body contouring procedures in their clinic. Eligible participants performed nonsurgical aesthetic procedures on at least 10 patients per month in each major category, including neurotoxins and fillers, and had treated at least 30 active or recent patients receiving GLP-1 agonists in 2024.

Skin Laxity and Muscle Tone Drive Treatment Patterns

Among healthcare professionals surveyed, loss of lean muscle mass was most strongly associated with skin laxity, with 91% reporting at least a moderate impact. Aged appearance followed closely, with at least 90% reporting a moderate impact. Loss of muscle contour and tone was also frequently noted, alongside cellulite and posture changes.

These findings suggest that GLP-1 weight loss is influencing aesthetic consultation patterns beyond fat reduction alone. For clinicians, the results highlight the importance of assessing body composition related concerns, including muscle tone and contour, when discussing treatment goals with patients who have experienced medication associated weight loss.

Muscle Stimulation Use After GLP-1 Weight Loss

Treatment approaches also appeared to reflect this shift. Around half of healthcare professionals who owned a muscle stimulation device reported offering muscle stimulation treatments to patients receiving GLP-1 therapy who were concerned about lack of muscle tone or strength after weight loss. The average initial course included 7.7 treatments.

Maintenance treatment was also common among healthcare professionals using muscle stimulation in this patient group. Monthly maintenance was reported most often, followed by weekly treatment, every 2 months, and every 3 months.

Overall, the survey supports an integrated approach to post GLP-1 aesthetic care, combining weight management awareness with body contouring strategies that address skin laxity, aged appearance, cellulite, and muscle contour concerns.
