After obtaining his medical degree at Cambridge University, UK, in 1993, António Almeida concluded his specialist training in haematology in 2002. Almeida subsequently completed a clinical research fellowship at Imperial College London, UK, and achieved a PhD for work focusing on the molecular characterisation and targeted therapy for inherited glucose phosphate isomerase deficiency. He is now Director of the Clinical Haematology Service at the Hospital da Luz, Lisbon, Portugal, and following the conclusion of the European Hematology Association (EHA) 2023 Congress, Almeida has taken on the role of EHA President.
Almeida is active in clinical research, with a particular interest in myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic syndromes. He has written book chapters, and published extensively.
