FLORIDA measles cases are rising sharply as schools prepare to reopen amid declining childhood vaccination coverage.
The state recorded 155 measles cases between January 1 and July 18, 2026, giving Florida the fourth highest case count nationwide. The increase forms part of a broader U.S. outbreak that has pushed annual infections to their highest level in 35 years.
Nationally, 2,318 measles cases had been recorded by late July, exceeding the total reported during 2025. Approximately 69% of cases involved children and adolescents aged 19 years or younger, highlighting the growing burden among younger populations.
Florida Measles Cases Raise School Concerns
The timing of the increase has raised concerns about further transmission as Florida schools prepare to reopen. Among the statewide total, 19 infections occurred in children younger than 10 years.
Sixteen cases were identified across the Tampa Bay area. Pinellas County recorded six cases, while Hillsborough, Manatee, and Pasco counties each reported three. One case was recorded in Polk County.
Vaccination coverage among Florida kindergartners entering the 2024 to 2025 school year was approximately 88% for the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. This was below the coverage generally considered necessary to prevent sustained community transmission.
Local rates were lower in several affected areas. MMR vaccination coverage was reported at 86% in Hillsborough County and 87% in Pinellas County.
Declining MMR Coverage Increases Transmission Potential
Measles is highly contagious. When 10 people without immunity are exposed, as many as nine may become infected.
Clinical symptoms commonly include cough, high fever, and a characteristic rash. However, measles can progress to serious complications, including severe ear infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis. Brain inflammation may result in permanent neurological damage or death.
Across the U.S., MMR vaccination coverage has fallen to approximately 92.5%, with rates below 90% in 16 states. The decline has contributed to sustained outbreaks across multiple regions and renewed concern about the country’s measles elimination status.
For clinicians, the approaching school year reinforces the importance of reviewing vaccination histories, recognizing early symptoms, and considering measles in patients with compatible clinical presentations and potential exposure.
