Patients with skin of color are under-represented in atopic dermatitis (AD) clinical trials, despite higher incidence and persistence. Loss-of-function mutations in the Filaggrin gene are shown to be risk factors for AD development but are found to be less frequent and unique in skin of color populations, indicating another plausible mechanism for the nuances in AD prevalence among racial/ethnic groups. This article summarizes a new knowledge study, whose objective was to evaluate the efficacy of a prebiotic skincare regimen, plus identify relevant skin barrier biomarker(s) in ethnically diverse patients with mild‑AD.
