European Medical Group has been named on the shortlist for Growth Business of the Year at the Private Business Awards 2026, placing the company among a select group of high-performing UK businesses recognised for their commercial growth and impact.

About the Private Business Awards

Sponsored by the accounting and business advisory firm BDO, the awards celebrate the country’s leading privately owned and private equity-backed businesses with annual turnovers between £10m and £500m. More than 700 nominations were submitted across 11 categories this year, highlighting the scale of competition for a place on the shortlist.

Now in its second year, the Private Business Awards were established to recognise ambitious mid-sized companies that are making a significant contribution to the UK economy through sustained growth, innovation and leadership.

Finalists are selected by an independent judging panel, with previous winners including Totalmobile, Flagstone Group and Cycle Pharma.

Why European Medical Group was shortlisted

For European Medical Group, the shortlist reflects a period of continued expansion across its healthcare publishing and medical education businesses. Since its founding in 2012, the company has grown from a single open-access medical journal into an international organisation serving healthcare professionals and the life sciences industry through multiple specialist brands.

Spencer Gore, Founder, European Medical Group, said: “I’m delighted that EMJ has been shortlisted for the Private Business Awards 2026. Being recognised in the Growth Business of the Year category is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the passion, dedication and hard work of our team.

“Well done to everyone involved in helping us grow by over 36% per year, year on year, on average for the last 14 years – an absolutely incredible job and one I’ve been told on many occasions ‘can’t be done’.

“’Dream big people, it can be done.'”

From startup to international growth

Headquartered in London, European Medical Group has expanded internationally in recent years with offices in Miami and Amsterdam.

Alongside the European Medical Journal (EMJ), the group includes American Medical Journal (AMJ), its dedicated US publishing division; EMJ Learning, an accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) provider; and EMJ GOLD, a premium news and content platform serving the pharmaceutical industry.

The Growth Business of the Year category recognises organisations that have demonstrated exceptional commercial performance while successfully scaling their operations.

Recognising UK business success

Commenting on this year’s shortlist, Mark Sykes, Head of Consulting, BDO, said:

“At BDO, we partner with and champion the ambitious private companies that are the heart of the UK economy.

“It is these companies and the people behind them that continue to drive our economic growth across every region and sector in the UK. These awards shine a light on the innovation, ambition and success that should be commended and will inspire other businesses across the UK.

“Despite economic uncertainty and a challenging business environment, this shortlist brings to life the impressive leadership, performance and resilience across the private sector. It reiterates the opportunity for the entrepreneurial, ambitious and growing mid-sized businesses.”

The Private Business Awards 2026 winners will be announced on Thursday 10 September at The Savoy Hotel in London.
